NATURAL HAIR TIPS FOR BLACK WOMEN

How to Retain Ph Balanced Hair and Maintain a Ph balanced Lifestyle For Black Women.

No matter how much you moisturize through co-washing, hot oil/protein treatments, or the use of products after products, do you still find your hair shriveling up into a crispy flaky nappy mess? I have! I tried everything (almost everything) and failed, losing tons of money on products that just didn’t work. Well, here’s your solution! Retain Ph balance.

Let’s first discuss, exactly what Ph Balance is. Ready for your Chemistry 101 lesson. What was that...you slept through High School? Ha! Let’s dive right in and make this simple and fun! Ph stands for parts per hydrogen. A pH number measures from 0-14 depending on how acidic or alkaline a liquid is. Any liquid ranging from 1 to 7 is acidic and any liquid ranging from 7 to 14 is alkaline; 7 being neutral, meaning it has the same amount of acids and alkali, which balance each other out (see chart to your right) .

Although these number are quite close they are in actuality 10 times more or less than is neighbor on the scale. For instance pure water is 10 times more acidic than sea water. On the other end of the spectrum, milk of magnesia is a base with a pH of 10, which is why it’s soothing to an acidic stomach. As you can see, substances at either end of the pH spectrum can be corrosive—but if you combine these substances, they neutralize and create salt water. They balance because they’re at opposite ends of the scale.

Now that you have the general chemistry lesson, let’s see why this is crucial to achieving healthy natural hair. Why do natural “products” work best on natural hair? To know your hair works and I mean your OWN hair, product free, chemical free, you can then feel if your hair is healthy and what it needs. Many chemically based products are not balanced and do more harm than good to your hair. However, natural products aren’t justified to to make a difference on your hair alone. Natural products can however help you create that balance in which your hair hungers for.

Below I included a recipe that I have used for over 3 years now. I first received this leave-in conditioner recipe from the more infamous natural hair guru, Kimmay Love (her information will be linked below) whom since has gone and recreated her own natural hair product line which I admit doesn’t compare to her original all natural recipe, but to each his own! Furthermore, her teachings on natural hair remain current and relevant. Click the video link below to learn more about pH balanced hair from her you tube account: Kimmaytube.
